How to Take Care of Your Swimwear

Make your swimsuits last as long as your adventures. Read on for our Fit Expert tips and tricks for swimwear care.

Summer may be coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean your adventures in the water have to end. It’s Back to Pool season at Swimco, which means families all over the country are getting ready to hit the pool again. Swimwear care is an important topic for anyone who owns a swimsuit, so whether you’re a frequent aquaciser or a seasonal beach vacationer, these tips are for you.

1. Check the material.

When shopping for a new swimsuit, take a peek at the label. Swimwear is often made from a combination of fabrics, and the fabric listed first (typically the one with the highest concentration) determines the suit’s main features. If you’re looking for an extra long-lasting suit, look for polyester. It’s resistant to pilling and fading, making it the perfect material for high-contact water sports or prolonged exposure to chlorine and saltwater. The higher the concentration of polyester, the stronger the fabric will be.

Shopping for your weekly pool classes? Swimco offers fitness swimwear made from 100% polyester. Many of our styles are chlorine-resistant with UPF 50+ protection so you can focus on your swimming without having to worry about your suit.

2. Don’t skip the rinse.

Doing a pre-rinse before you jump into the pool helps your swimsuit absorb less chlorine. It’s also essential to rinse off your suit after you’re done swimming to start washing off any chemicals (or sand if you’re at the beach). Here’s a tip—save time by wearing your swimsuit in the shower while you rinse off rather than rinsing it separately.

3. Hand wash your suit.

Once you get home, it’s important to wash your suit by hand. Washers and dryers can be too abrasive, with temperatures that are too high, making your swimwear more prone to damage. Although we understand how busy life can be sometimes, hand washing is still the best way to go. Never use bleach, and never send your swimwear out for dry cleaning.

4. Use Swimwear Cleaner.

Swimwear Cleaner is vital to swimwear care because it’s specially designed to remove saltwater residue and neutralize damaging chemicals like chlorine. It also preserves colour brilliance while removing oils and odours and can even be used to remove stains.

Check out our Swimwear Cleaner for a locally-made, plant-based, and cruelty-free option. To use it, simply place your swimwear in 4 litres of cold water with a capful of Swimco Swimwear Cleaner. Hand wash your swimwear, let it sit for three minutes, and rinse.

5. Dry your swimwear properly.

After you’ve washed your suit, squeeze out the water without wringing or twisting it. It also helps to roll it in a towel, pressing gently to catch any excess moisture. Skip the dryer, and instead lay the suit flat or hang it to dry, away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. Make sure it’s completely dry before storing it.

Your swimwear is your constant companion throughout your sunny vacation adventures and poolside fitness journeys.

By treating it with care, you can extend its life so you can Feel Good Half Naked for many more seasons to come.
